RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the British defence ministry.

The site, located using surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of entry passages down to the depot... early reports indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their courage," he said. "Including them were thousands of British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
